Line and Wash sketches

General / 20 February 2023

Watched 'Sketches in Line & Wash by Jeanette Gurney' on the Youtubes, was inspired to try painting with a watercolour pen over some ink sketches of vulture inspired dinosaur-like creatures. Over the years I have drawn a great deal in pencil/pencil/etc, sculpted in water/oil clay, but for whatever reason just never really got into painting with physical media, just digitally. Overall I am liking this combination of ink and watecolour, really forces me to commit to an idea.

7 years of studies

General / 18 August 2019

Hey All,

I wanted to do a thorough shoutout to my sculpture and drawing tutor and friend Mikhail Pertsev and his atelier Art Classes Vancouver. I stumbled on his atelier's flyer 7  years ago at drop-in life drawing in Vancouver. Learned a lot here and drank a lot of tea. Thought it would make a good blog posts.

There are a lot of artists in this area due to the film and games industries so I am hoping this might help more people find the studio.

Ecorche is a study of a cast by Houdon, still a WIP.

Sculpture of Yanni

Quick study of Yanni for relief sculpture project.

This is actually a sculpt of a different ear from David.

At a second James Stewart workshop, again trying to find a hybrid between both teacher's recommendations.

Sculpted at James Stewart's workshop, attempted to use both teacher's techniques/theory.

We start with studying a cube. We draw a plaster cast as accurately in perspective and proportion as possible.

Work in Progress - African Lion

General / 29 July 2019

Hi All,

Folks have been encouraging me to try Artstation Blogs as an opportunity to start sharing more works in progress and shorter projects.

I am sculpting an African Lion while I take a break from a longer term project. There is a long way to go but I am happy that I picked it back up. The sketch was started in 2016 and was quickly abandoned in order to devote time to the long term project. Worked on it briefly a year later, then abandoned it again for 2 years.

The original plan was to model the Lion in order to groom and texture it. That may come at some point but the model needs a lot of work. It is a semi-ecorche at this time, all the muscles are too sharply defined. I am unfamiliar with feline anatomy and have overdrawn it to help me understand. I plan to blend it away with fat and flesh and the elasticity of skin over time but there are still a lot of anatomy and design issues to solve. Plan to resculpt the veins, for now these are placeholder.

Just discovered that one of my favourite sculptors is also working on a Lion sculpt. It is looking fantastic, really inspiring.

My compulsive file saving in the form of an animated gif:

So much left to do. The likeness still needs a lot of work, and there are a number of anatomy issues to figure out before I start removing the harsh transitions between muscles and muscle groups. Still very much an ecorche-like state at this point.
