Blue Mars - Nirgal - Marathon around Mars

This sequence has been stuck in my head ever since I first read the novel Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. Hundreds of years from now Mars is in a partially terraformed state. Here one of the main characters, Mars-born Nirgal, joins a marathon which asks contestants to circumnavigate the entire planet across both highland and lowland environments. Due to the massive elevation differences a breathing apparatus is required while crossing some highland sections of the route.
Mars-born humans are on average taller than Earth-born humans, having developed in 0.38 gravity.
Mars born thereforthin and tall, Nirgal runs the 'Around-Mars' marathon, he crosses both lowland and highland environments. In the highlands a breathing apparatus is necissary, whereas in lowland environments like this Sequoia forest he can breath freely.

My thought here is he just descended from the highlands into this Sequoia forest and hasn't changed out of his highland gear yet.
